At the tender age of 33, Mark Zuckerberg is undoubtedly one of the most successful Internet entrepreneurs in the world today. According to Forbes magazine, Zuckerberg became the youngest billionaire in the world when he was aged just 23 back in 2008. Most famous for his position as the Chairman, CEO and co-founder of Facebook, Mark currently lives with his wife Priscilla Chan and his two children in Palo Alto, California, where the Facebook head office is based.
Read on to find out more about this bright and philanthropic young individual who has been a constant presence on the Times 100 Most Influential list since 2010.
Born in White Plains, New York on the 14th of May 1984, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is the son of Karen and Edward Zuckerberg, a psychiatrist and a dentist. Together with his three sisters, he was raised in the small town of Dobbs Ferry, New York. From a very young age, Zuckerberg was already excelling in his studies and was at the top of his classes. In his junior year of high school, he was already being awarded multiple prizes in various science subjects. Zuckerberg was an all-round high achiever, who knew how to read and write in 5 different languages including Ancient Greek. He was also captain of the school fencing team.
Zuckerberg’s passion for computer programming started as early as middle school. He quickly learnt basic programming in the 90s, and even had private lessons from an experienced software developer to learn more about it. His personal tutor quickly realised his incredible potential and referred to him as a “prodigy”.
While he was still in high school, Zuckerberg took it upon himself to start a graduate course in programming at a nearby college in his free time. His passion for and skill in programming was very much present from an early age. Writer Jose Antonio Vargas has been quoted as stating, “Some kids played computer games. Mark created them.”
Zuckerberg’s earliest known software program is called “ZuckNet”, a program which enabled the computers between his home and his father’s dental office to communicate with each other. In high school, he also built a music player which he named the Synapse Media Player. By the time Zuckerberg started university at Harvard, he was already known to be a prodigy in the programming world.
Whilst Zuckerberg was at Harvard, he kept himself busy outside of his classes writing programs such as CourseMatch (which enabled users to choose classes based on their peer’s selections and create study groups) and Facemash (in which users could browse through photos of other students and vote on who they thought was better looking).
Facemash quickly caused a fair amount of controversy on campus. The site was taken down by the college after just two days, as its popularity had managed to crash their network overnight. Many Harvard students also filed complaints about the fact that nobody had asked their permission before including their photos on Facemash. Zuckerberg had to issue a public apology on the matter.
In January 2004, which Zuckerberg was still studying at Harvard, he started to write the code for a new site which he launched the following month as ‘Thefacebook’.
Facebook was launched from Zuckerberg’s dormitory room at Harvard, and the site was developed by Zuckerberg himself along with his roommates, his friends, and fellow Harvard students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook started out as a site that could be used purely by Harvard students but was extended to other major colleges once its popularity quickly became apparent.
The rapid rise and success of Facebook led to Zuckerberg dropping out of Harvard in his third year to focus all of his attention on developing the site and growing the business. He never graduated but many years later, in 2017, he would be the recipient of an honorary degree from the famous university.
After dropping out, Zuckerberg and the other Facebook co-founders decided to base themselves in the heart of Silicon Valley. They rented out a house in Palo Alto in California, which would serve as the first Facebook office as well as their residence. The very first summer they were there, the young entrepreneurs managed to score an investment from industry bigwig Peter Thiel. Their initial plan to return to Harvard quickly changed as they realised that they had a huge business on their hands.
By the summer of 2010, Facebook had already grown to 500 million users from around the world. Zuckerberg insisted that it wasn’t about the money for him, and frequently stated that his true aim was to make the world more open and connected. The world was starting to take real notice of this passionate young entrepreneur, with Vanity Fair placing Zuckerberg at the top of their ‘100 most influential people’ list that year.
Zuckerberg’s passion for connecting people around the world is so strong that he decided to create and launch a project called Internet.org in August 2013. He talked about the project in a public post on Facebook, explaining that the aim of Internet.org was to provide access to the Internet to the 5 billion people around the world who didn’t have it at that time. Zuckerberg’s mission with Internet.org is to share the wealth of knowledge available on the internet with more people globally by overcoming the problems of affordability and accessibility to connect everyone around the world.
As of February 14 2018, Zuckerberg’s net worth is estimated at US $72.4 billion. What is interesting is that he only receives a US $1 salary for his position as CEO on Facebook! This the same salary that Steve Jobs took for his position as CEO of Apple.
Impressively, Zuckerberg and his wife have made a pledge to give away 99% of their wealth as part of The Giving Pledge started by Bill Gates.
Zuckerberg married his college sweetheart, Priscilla Chan, who he met while he was at Harvard. They got together in 2003, and moved in together in 2010. Chan was a medical student in San Francisco, at the University of California. Because of his then girlfriend’s (now wife’s) Chinese heritage, Zuckerberg took it upon himself to learn Mandarin, adding yet another language to his long list of languages.
In May 2012, Zuckerberg married Chan in a quiet and intimate ceremony in their backyard. Just three years later, the couple announced that they were expecting a baby girl. In December 2015, their first baby girl Maxima Chan Zuckerberg was born. Their second daughter August was born just a couple of years later in the summer of 2017.
Though Zuckerberg was raised Jewish, he later mentioned that he was an atheist. However, he has since renounced that and shown an affinity towards Buddhism. More recently, he ended his 2017 commencement speech at Harvard University with a Jewish prayer, and it seems his religion has become more important to him as he grows older.
Interesting Stories and Lesser Known Facts
Zuckerberg found himself at the centre of various legal disputes immediately after the launch of Facebook. Fellow Harvard students Divya Narendra and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg claiming that he had stolen their idea which he had previously agreed to work on for them. They had been hoping to build a similar social network which they would have called Harvard Connection. Zuckerberg ultimately reached a settlement with them, offering them 1.2 million shares of Facebook.
Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook, also filed a lawsuit against the company and Zuckerberg, which was eventually settled out of court. Since Saverin signed a non-disclosure agreement, the terms of the settlement were never revealed.
The above lawsuits formed much of the plot of The Social Network, the wildly popular 2010 movie that was loosely based on Zuckerberg’s life. The movie is based on the initial few years of Facebook and stars Jesse Eisenberg in the lead role. The film didn’t portray Zuckerberg in the most positive light, strongly implying that he created Facebook purely to elevate his status as he didn’t get into one of the exclusive Harvard final clubs. It also implied that he betrayed Saverin in quite a big way. Zuckerberg has stated the film is mostly sensationalism, and that the true story was much more boring in real life.
Fun Fact: Zuckerberg appeared in an episode of The Simpsons in 2010 where he voiced himself. In the episode called Loan-a Lisa, Lisa Simpson meets Zuckerberg at a convention for entrepreneurs. He tells her that there is no need to be a college graduate to be successful, referencing the examples of other famous entrepreneurs who were dropouts such as Richard Branson and Bill Gates
Fun Fact: Even before his high school graduation Zuckerberg was approached by multiple companies such as Microsoft and AOL with job offers. He turned down every single one of them.
Fun Fact: Every couple of months, Facebook hold “hackathons” in their offices. Participants have just one night to develop a concept and complete it. The hackathons are fun and social events, with music and beer involved. Along with other Facebook employees, Zuckerberg is often in attendance.
Zuckerberg and his wife have pledged to do what they can to improve the public schooling system in the United States, and announced that they would like to dedicate most of their wealth to “advancing human potential and promoting equality”. Zuckerberg started a foundation dedicated to this called Start-up: Education. In 2010, the massive $100 million donation that he made to public schools in Newark, New Jersey was widely reported on. Some even criticised the tech entrepreneur for making this donation so close to the release of The Social Network and accused him of doing so to improve his public image. In truth, Zuckerberg had wanted to make the donation anonymously but had been persuaded not to in order to raise awareness of the issue.
Zuckerberg and Chan have also signed up to “The Giving Pledge”, along with other entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Signing up to this pledge means signing up to donate at least 50% of their wealth to charities. In 2015, the charitable couple announced that they would eventually give away 99% of their own Facebook shares to their Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. This initiative was created to focus on the improvement of health and education.
Due to their various philanthropic efforts, Zuckerberg and Chan were placed at the top of The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of the most generous Americans in 2013. By this point, they had donated almost a billion dollars to charity.
Every single year since 2009, Zuckerberg has publicly committed to taking on a personal challenge, which he has declared on this Facebook page. His previous challenges have included reading 25 books in a year, building an AI for his home, learning Mandarin, and visiting every single state in America in the space of a year.
For his personal challenge for 2018, Zuckerberg has announced that he would like to improve upon existing methods to protect Facebook users from abuse or hate. Zuckerberg stated on his Facebook page, “We won’t prevent all mistakes or abuse, but we currently make too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools. If we’re successful this year then we’ll end 2018 on a much better trajectory.”

His grandfather was a wrestler, and his grandmother was a promoter in the world of wrestling. Many would say that the passion for wrestling ran in his family and his blood.
Johnson was briefly living in New Zealand, but returned to the U.S. at a young age. He spent his early years of schooling in Connecticut, and then moved to Pennsylvania due to his father’s job. Whilst at high school in Pennsylvania, Johnson joined the football team, the track team, and the wrestling team.
Due to his talent on the football field, Johnson was offered many offers from Division 1 collegiate programs. He chose the University of Miami, and went there on a full football scholarship. In 1991, he was chosen to be part of the national team the Miami Hurricanes. Unfortunately, he was injured soon after and had to be replaced.
While at the University of Miami, Johnson also met Dany Garcia, who he would soon decide to marry. In 1995, Johnson received his degree in criminology with physiology from the university. He went on to join a team in the Canadian Football League the same year. Two months after the season begun, Johnson was cut from the team.
As many of Johnson’s relatives were in the wrestling industry, it didn’t come as a huge surprise to anyone when he decided to become a wrestler himself. Though his father initially wasn’t as into the idea, he finally agreed to train Johnson himself.
Johnson managed to get some trial matches with the WWF in 1996, through a connection to the company. He used his real name on the ring at that time. In 1996, Johnson officially came on board with the World Wrestling Federation and his debut under the name Rocky Maivia. The name was his father and his grandfather’s ring names combined.
Rocky Maivia made his debut with rest of the entourage of Marc Mero on the 4th of November in 1996, as part of Monday Night Raw. His first WWF official match led to him being the only survivor of an elimination match of eight.
Maivia wasn’t instantly appreciated by fans. The initially thought that his character was a little cheesy. However, after a string of successes and title wins, he started to gain a reputation on the ring.
After his second win of the Intercontinental Championship, Johnson suffered a knee injury on the ring in a 1997 match. After this time, he started to refer to himself as The Rock and often talked about himself in the third person. He also would often insult the WWF audience in his promos, and such antics made him more and more famous.
The Rock had many feuds with other wrestlers throughout his time at the WWE. He regained the Intercontinental Championship belt by 1998, and he also overthrew Faarooq to become the new Nation of Domination leader.
Over the next few years, The Rock continued to defeat rivals including Dan Severn and Triple H. He also managed to defeat Mankind and Shamrock in a steel cage match to rise to the ranks of being the top contender for WWE Championship.
In 1998, The Rock joined The Corporation, and continued his ongoing feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin. He even stole Austin’s personalised championship belt.
The Rock was known for his hugely entertaining promos, and his popularity rose over the years. He started to refer to himself as The People’s Champion. He also continuously feuded with fellow wrestler Mankind over the main WWF Championship. For a while the championship went back and forth between the two. Their feud finally ended when The Rock managed to win his third championship from him. However, he ended up losing it to Stone Cold Steve Austin at the following WrestleMania XV.
The Rock tried to position and portray himself as a bit of a villain, but his fans loved him and cheered for him. He became something of a fan favourite by the end of the 90s. His charismatic persona and verbal skills had much to do with his popularity, and his fan loved to repeat his various catchphrases. The Rock merchandise also proved really successful.
In 2000, The Rock managed to win his fourth World Wrestling Federation Championship. And then at King of the Ring, he went on to win it a fifth time. He eventually lost it to Angle at the No Mercy match, and continued to feud with him for some time in an attempt to regain it. He was eventually successful and found himself a six-time winner of the WWF championship.
The Rock was suspended from the WWF for a short while and took the time off to act in his first major film The Mummy Returns. Upon his return to the WWF in 2001, he quickly resumed winning titles such as the WWF Tag Team Championship with Jericho and the WCW Championship (now known as the World Championship). He lost this to Jericho at the end of 2001.
The following year, The Rock was one of the headline acts of the WWE Asian Tour. He travelled to Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan to perform at the sell-out shows. Upon his return, he challenged wrestling legend Hulk Hogan to a WrestleMania match. He managed to defeat him in an iconic match between two legends that was viewed by millions.
After a short sabbatical, The Rock returned to break a record by winning his seventh WWF Championship. He defended the title for some time before losing it to Lesnar. Following this, the Rock decided to take another sabbatical from wrestling to focus on some more films.
The Rock returned in 2003 and restarted feuds with both Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin. After a short while he decided to leave again and returned to WWE in other roles that didn’t involve wrestling. From 2004 – 2009, The Rock made only sporadic appearances at WWE, choosing instead to place his focus on his film career. He did appear as the WrestleMania host in 2011. Over the next few years he returned to the ring only occasionally.

He appeared in music videos, hosted Saturday Night Live, and had guest appearances on television shows, all as The Rock. He was starting to be regarded as a modern pop culture icon.

At this point Watson started to express her desire to go back to study at university once the film series was complete.
The final Harry Potter book was adapted into two films for financial reasons. The final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part II, was released towards the end of 2010.

Dr Dre Net Worth
Born with the name Andre Romelle Young, this famous rapper is much more well known by most of us by his stage name Dr Dre. There isn’t much in the music industry that Dr Dre doesn’t have the talent for. He is a rapper, a songwriter, and a record producer. And he is proficient at playing various instruments including the keyboards. To add to that, he’s a hugely successful entrepreneur as well. He is the CEO of both Beats Electronics and Aftermath Entertainment. His huge net worth makes him one of the richest people in the world of hip hop.
Read on to find out more about the story of this musically gifted business mogul.
Dr. Dre’s net worth is estimated at $740 million. He is widely regarded as the richest man in hip hop, and a lot of the net worth is due to his business Beats by Dre. The acquisition by Apple is really what cemented his fortune.
Born on February 18, 1965, Andre Romelle Young was the first of Verna and Theodore Young’s children. His parents got a divorce just seven years after his birth, but he gained three siblings through his mother’s remarriage.
Young was raised in Compton, an area known for its gang violence. It was this very violence that made his parents transfer him from Vanguard Junior High to the relatively safer Roosevelt Junior High in the suburbs. His grandmother played a major role in raising him. His mother’s remarriage to Warren Griffin brought four step siblings into his life, (one of whom would eventually be the rapper Warren G).
Young didn’t have the best grades at school, and was much more focused on socialising and music. His cousin was the producer known as Sir Jinx. At a young age, he became father to a son named Curtis with Cassandra Greene. Curtis was primarily raised by his mother, and didn’t actually meet his own father until 20 years later.
From an early age, Young loved to attend live music and DJ gigs. He often frequented the club Eve After Dark to watch live rap performances. His first real gig in the music industry was as a DJ in that very club, calling himself Dr. J based on his favourite professional basketball player Julius Erving.
It was at Eve After Dark that Young met another aspiring rapper called Antoine Carraby who would later become a member of N.W.A. called DJ Yella. At this time, Young decide to adopt the name Dr. Dre. It was a mix of his Dr. J alias and his own real first name Andre. Dre and Carraby used the back room at the club as a studio to record their first few demos.
Dr. Dre went on to join a musical group called World Class Wreckin’ Cru in 1984. They dominated the hip hop scene in the West Coast in the early 80s. Their first hit was a record called Surgery, and it sold more than 50,000 copies just in the Compton area.
Together with DJ Yella, Dre performed mixes at local radio stations. He was frequently absent from school, and was almost kicked off the swim team for this reason.
After he left high school, Dre’s mother wanted him to pursue further education so he enrolled himself at the Chester Adult School situated in Compton. He then briefly attending a school for radio broadcasting. He left Chester School pretty soon to focus on his music career.
Dr. Dre met the rapper now known as Ice Cube in 1986. They collaborated on various songs together, which were released through record label Ruthless Records. The first album by the group calling themselves N.W.A. was called Straight Outta Compton and was a huge success, even though there hadn’t been much airplay on the radio and no big concert tours to promote the album. For their second album, Dre did much of the production as well as featuring in it heavily.
Following disagreements with fellow group member Eazy-E, Dre decided to leave the group in 1991. Together with his then bodyguard Suge Knight who founded Death Row records, Dre continued to release music. The first single was a collaboration with Snoop Dog.
Dre’s first solo album was called The Chronic. It was praised for his distinctive style of rap and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Snoop Dogg also featured heavily on the album. The sound of the album came to dominate the hip hop scene of the early 90s. It was a triple platinum album, and Dre had the first taste of huge success with it. He also won a Grammy Award, Best Rap Solo Performance for the song “Let Me Ride”
According to Billboard magazine, Dre was the eighth biggest selling music artist of 1993. He got his first number one on the BillBoard chart with the song California Love.
Other than the material on which he featured himself, Dre also produced albums for other artists. This included Snoop Dogg’s first album which was also a huge success.
Death Row Records signed up rapper 2pac to their label in 1995, and he was featured on California love with Dr. Dre. The following year, Dre decided to leave the label due to his concerns that Knight was engaging in corrupt practices. He decided to set up his own label, Aftermath Entertainment.
The first album released by Dr. Dre’s new label featured many songs with him on it, as well as many with other artists signed to the new label. The album sold well but was not as widely praised as Dre’s previous work. Rumours spread that the label was suffering from financial troubles. There was a turning point when Eminem (at the time not a well-known artist) was signed by Dr. Dre. His first album with Dr. Dre producing some of the songs was a huge success and generally received critical acclaim. It revived the Aftermath Entertainment label’s place in the industry.
Dr. Dre decided to release his second solo album in 1999, which featured many famous collaborators such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige. The album became hugely successful and re-cemented Dr. Dre’s place in the music industry. He won the Grammy Award Producer of the Year for the album.
After the success of this, Dr. Dre decided to spend some time focusing on production for other artists. This included co-producing many of the tracks on Eminem’s famous Marshall Mathers LP album. It was again a huge success for Eminem and consequently reaped a lot of acclaim for Dr. Dre for the production. Dre also produced popular singles released by Mary J. Blige and Gwen Stefani around this time. Dre continued his successful working relationship with Eminem by executive producing his third album, the Eminem Show in 2002, as well as his fourth album Encore.
The Aftermath Entertainment label also signed up New York rapper 50 Cent, and his first album called Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was a major success in 2003. Dre also produced 2005’s major hit single How We Do by the rapper The Game.
Dr. Dre’s continued success as a producer got him a place on the Rolling Stone’s list of The Greatest Artists of all Time. He continued producing for many popular artists including Raekwon and Jay Z for the next few years.
Dr. Dre had planned to release his next studio album Detox in 2010, after years of working on it. However, he didn’t release all the material on it. Many say that his love for perfectionism is what drove him not to release it, as he didn’t want to release anything he wasn’t completely happy with. The single I Need a Doctor by Eminem and Skylar Grey from the album was the biggest success from the releases so far. The following year, Dr. Dre announced his plans for a break from the world of music to focus on his business endeavour Beats By Dre. and to spend time with his family.
In 2015, Dre announced that he wanted to release an album called Compton that he said was going to be his final album. It was inspired by the biopic for N.W.A. called Straight Outta Compton, and was to feature several of his favourite collaborators including Eminem, The Game, and Snoop Dogg, among others.
In 2016, Dre featured on Puff Daddy’s tour, the Bad Boy Reunion tour, along with Snoop Dogg.
Dr. Dre also has an extremely successful business venture, on top of his super successful music career. He released his headphones brand in 2008, called Beats by Dr. Dre. It launched various different types of headphones, and partnered with HP to release a limited edition laptop. Apple Inc. purchased the brand from Dr. Dre in 2014 for a reported $3 billion, which is what makes him the richest man in the world of hip hop now.
Dr. Dre has six kids that he had with five separate women, 4 sons and 2 daughters. His first child was born to Cassandra Joy Greene in 1981 when Dre was just 16 years old. His first son is called Curtis Young and he is a rapper with the stage name Hood Surgeon.
Dre’s next child was born soon after, a daughter La Tanya Danielle Young, in 1983. 5 years later, he had his next son with Jenita Porter who is named Andre Young Jr. He sadly passed away at the young age of 20, reportedly from a heroin and morphine overdose. The entire family was understandably devasted at the loss.
Dr. Dre had a relationship with the singer Michel’le for 9 years from 1987 to 1996. She had been a frequent vocalist on records from Ruthless Records and Death Row Records. They welcomed their son Marcel into the world in 1991.
In 1996, Dre got married to Nicole Threatt, who had previously been married to the NBA player Sedale Threatt. Together Dre and Nicole had two children, a son Truice and a daughter Truly.
